Nearly three dozen cars collected by Carl Moyer, who turned a onevehicle showroom into Iowa's largest Chevrolet dealership, are going up for auction. Moyer died in September 2024, 36 years after founding Karl Chevrolet in Ankeny, Iowa. In addition to selling cars, Moyer loved collecting and racing them. His family has enlisted Mecum Auctions to sell most of his meticulously restored and maintained collection Jan. 17 in Florida. "Just maintaining a hot rod one is a lot of work," Jami Paulson, Moyer's granddaughter, told TV station KCCI in Des Moines. "They're kind of finicky sometimes. So having nearly 40 to take care of didn't really make sense anymore." Mecum estimates the value of the vehicles being sold at between $4.5 million and $6 million. The collection includes 25 Chevrolets, five Fords and a 1951 International Metro Snap-On Tools truck. More than half of the cars have less than 1,000 miles on the odometer, and many are custom builds.
