No longer an abstract alternative fuel, ammonia will debut this year in commercial operation, after years of scrutiny, scepticism and testing. For most of the past decade, ammonia has occupied an awkward space in shipping's decarbonisation debate. Too toxic to be waved through casually, too unfamiliar to be trusted instinctively, yet too compelling to ignore. It has appeared in roadmaps, strategy decks and conference panels as a future solution, often pencilled in for the mid-2030s, safely distant from the present. What makes 2026 different is not rhetoric, but timing. Hardware is arriving. Ships are being delivered. Crews are being trained. And a small number of owners and enginemakers are stepping forward to prove whether ammonia can function not as an abstract fuel of the future, but as a working one in the present.
