Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet squadrons today form the core of the US Navy's Carrier Air Wings. David Willis outlines the development of the aircraft and its eventful initial deployment. The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet entered US Navy service in the early 1980s, replacing the LTV A-7E Corsair II and the McDonnell Douglas Phantom II on the decks of its aircraft carriers. Although the Hornet was able to undertake both the attack and fighter roles equally well, it was criticized for its short range and endurance. In July 1987, the US Department of Defense awarded a contract to study upgrades. At the time, the US Navy carrier air wing of the 2010s was expected to comprise General Dynamics/McDonnell Douglas A-12 Avenger IIs, the Naval Advanced Tactical Fighter (NATF) derivative of the Lockheed Martin F-22 and upgraded F/A-18 Hornets.
