As a new endurance record is set by the crew of a USAF U-2 spy plane, Tom Kaminiski looks back on the success of the Dragon Lady and at its continuing future flying close to the edge of space. On the 70th anniversary of its unintentional maiden flight, the USAF's iconic Dragon Lady spy plane set a new record when TU-2S 80-1078, flown by a crew from the 9th Reconnaissance Wing's 1st Reconnaissance Squadron (RS), carried out a 14-hour mission that spanned more than 6,000nm (11,112km). Beginning late on July 31, 2025, and ending on the anniversary of the first flight on August 1, the mission marked the longest in the platform's history, demonstrating the aircraft's endurance and technical capability. During the flight, Dragon 70 set new endurance records for "an aircraft of its class", according to a US Air Force press release.
